Painting preferences...

So, my chiropractor informed me that I should avoid kneeling if I want to stop putting my back out of alignment... but my favorite way to paint is to spread out a tarp on the floor, lay a canvas on it and to kneel over it, painting. In light of Adel showing off her cool painting wall... I was wondering how the rest of you painted. I should probably start using my easel properly... :) ...now I have it low to the ground so, again, I am kneeling when I paint. Any suggestions?

  1. haha . . . i've always been a fan of having my canvas propped up on my drawing board, in my lap . . . i don't know why . . . haha, i guess it reminds me of sketching, and that is a comfortable thing!

  2. Ooh ooo, I like body mechanics!

I personally always end up standing when I'm making art, even if I don't plan on it that way. So for me a nice tall table/counter is usually best so I don't have to lean over much. You could try that since you would still be able to look down on the painting but not kneel. Just check that you're not hunching over too much or you'll be in the same position as kneeling. Ideally your ears, neck and sit bones should be in a straight line.

Drawing board in the lap could also work like Laua said. I don't really love easels either. It's something about having to lift my arms so high. Mostly I think the key is to experiment and keep moving and changing positions, whatever you might settle on.
