some of my covers . . .

this one the author wanted to have a her picture on the front cover . . . blah, the background of the picture made it look like an early 90's sr. picture photo, ya know? i extrated that baby! haha, i still haven't heard back from the author, i kind of think that she'll not like it, but whatever! i hope that she will . . . but its been my experience that when you do something they didn't ask for (even if it looks better) they don't like it . . . open your minds people!!

ha, speaking of an author not liking a cover . . . the author didn't like this one, and had me change it to a stupid, template looking thing, but this is one of my favs so far!

i like this one too . . . and so did the author! yay!

dittos with this one . . . i had fun designing it . . . the author had requested for a picture of a teacup and an accompanying spoon on a background of 'good and plenty' candies . . . which would have looked dumb . . . so, rather than doing that, i used the colors from the 'good and plenty' packaging and made a fun design! and the author loved it! yay! you win some, you lose some, but this one i won!

ha, here's another one where i didn't do what the author asked for . . . i'm still waiting to hear back . . . he had given me a regular old photo of stonehenge, but i saw this image on our stock photo thing and i couldn't help myself! it was too perfect!!! i really hope the author likes it!

  1. Laura, you make me feel inadequate, in a good way! These look so professional. I would love to have a detailed conversation about each one.
(By now you know how I love to type : )

Thought the typography was particularly nice on the first one. What font is that by the way? Can't imagine about the pictures. This one sounds hard. Guessing you drew the flower background?

I also really like the second one. This author must be blind. The title arrangement is great. Also nice font flow from front to back. It's not the same but it goes. So I'm guessing this front picture was stock too like the stonehenge? Was it red like that or did you duotone it or however you do that in photoshop?

#3 is nice. Glad they liked it. I will cry if you actually drew that brain, so I'm gonna go with stock photo too right?

On the last one, I love how it's asymmetrical, but does it matter not to have the title on the spine? Just curious. Maybe it's more of a little booklet. I also love the stonehenge photo. It is perfect. Hope he likes it!

This is so cool. Tell me again how you got my dream job besides having a wonderful portfolio? Is there anything about this job that stinks besides dumb authors, so I can stop being quite so jealous?
    Love you all lots!

  2. haha . . . well, just so you know . . . all of the images are either given to me from the authors or they are from photo stock stuff . . . we're not really suppose to create too much . . . since they authors don't really pay for that kind of stuff . . .

hmmm . . .on the first one the font is gill sans . . . which i have come to love!! haha . . .

yeah, on the second one the author just liked to complain . . . she wasn't very nice . . . i'm happy to be done with her . . .

ummm, oh, on the last one with no title on the spine: we don't put spine text on the book if its under 100 pages . . . so, you were right, it was a size thing!

and as far as things stinking . . . nothing stinks aside from dumb authors . . . if another book designer job opens up i'll let you know! then we could be neighbors/roommates! it'd be awesome . . . :)
